Magnesium Hydroxide for Flue Gas Desulfurization

Commercial name: Brucite
Chemical content: Mg (OH)2
Physical property: Magnesium hydroxide is soluble in dilute acid and ammonium salt solution; it is almost insoluble in water and alcohol. Solubility (18℃) is 0.0009 g / 100 g in water. It is easy to absorb carbon dioxide from the air. When being heated to 350℃, Magnesium Hydroxide will become Magnesium Oxide and water.

Mg(HSO3)2+Mg(OH)2 → 2MgSO3+2H2O

Features of Magnesium Hydroxide for Flue Gas Desulfurization

1. High efficient
Chemical reactivity of magnesium hydroxide is much higher than calcium-based desulfurizer; and the molecular weight of magnesium hydroxide is smaller than calcium carbonate and calcium oxide. So the flue gas desulphurization efficiency of magnesium hydroxide is much higher than calcium-based desulfurizer at the same condition. Normally the desulphurization efficiency of magnesium hydroxide is 95~98%, and the desulphurization efficiency of limestone/parget is only 90~95%.
2. Less investment
Because of its flue gas desulphurization efficiency, small size absorption tower can be designed; less circulation size can be used; small power can be supplied. So the whole investment can have a 20% cost savings.
3. Lower operating cost
The main cost is desulfurizer and utilities. The consumption of magnesium hydroxide is around 40% of CaCO3 for removing same quantity SO2. The liquid-gas-ratio is very important while comparing the utilities. The liquid-gas-ratio of CaCO3system is 15L/m3 and the ratio of Mg(OH)2 system is less than 7L/m3. Moreover, the by product can be sold when use Mg(OH)2 system.
4. Stable operation
There is no scaling when use Mg(OH)2 system. The PH value can be controlled between 6.0 and 6.5 by using Mg(OH)2system, which can solve the problem of equipment corrosion.
